NATIONAL PARK SUTJESKA
National Park Sutjeska was established in 1962 and it covers an area of 17.250 ha. It consists of the Sutjeska river with its canyon, parts of Maglic Mountain (the highest peak in BiH 2.386m), Vucevo Mountain (1862 m) and Zelengora Mountain (2014 m). Apart from its historical value, this region has exceptionally rich and diverse natural treasures ranging from pristine quiet valleys and thick old forests to extreme mountain ranges and crystal clear glacial lakes. Perucica forest, the oldest and one of the last remaining primeval forests in Europe is situated within the park. There are 9 lakes on Zelengora Mountain, each unique in their natural beauty.
Within the park on a relatively small area is found a wide variety of
plants and animals. There is more then 2.600 plants with a large percentage of them being very rare and endemic. For example there is more then 100 kinds of edible mushrooms.
Animal world of NP Sutjeska is very rich and diverse. Its thick forests are the habitat to 140 bird species alone.
National Park ”Sutjeska” is a member of EUROPARK (European Parks Federation).
PERUCICA FOREST - THE OLDEST PRIMEVAL FOREST IN EUROPE
Primeval forest Perucica is a part of "Sutjeska" National Park. It is surrounded by the peaks of Maglic (2386m - the highest mountain in Bosnia and Herzegovina), Volujak (2337 m) and Snjeznica (1804m). Perucica forest is separated from Zelengora Mountain by Sutjeska River and its beautiful canyon. The forest is 6 km long and 1 to 3 km wide. It covers an area of 1291 hectares. The Perucac creek goes through the forest and it spectacularly falls down a 75m high cliff (Skakavac waterfalls).
Because of its stunning beauty Perucica Forest was officially made a protected reserve in 1952 and it it has been used since for scientific and educational purposes.
Perucica Forest is one of the last remaining areas of untouched nature and as such should be preserved for the generations to come.
The forest can only be explored in a company of rangers.
